6 Newsletters for Writers
Writers need inspiration. These newsletters might boost your creativity.
I’m an avid follower of newsletters that make me think and explore different aspects of storytelling. Here are some recommendations-
The Alipore Post
If you’re into poetry, you will really like this newsletter as it curates poems from all over the world. It also provides artwork and links from the web that will make you want to create your own poem and doodles. I once wrote a poem in response to their newsletters and won a copy of Ranjit Hoskote’s Jonahwhale. The poem is now a part of my chapbook. They usually post prompts on their social media handles. Follow them here.
2. A Personal Anthology
This newsletter run by Jonathan Gibbs is a treasure trove for short story enthusiasts. Every new newsletter has a different curation of stories from individuals. They will be taking a break for the summer. Access their collection of over 2000 story recommendations.
3. Memoir Monday
If you write personal essays or want to learn how to write engaging personal essays that matter, be sure to follow them. They curate the best essays from magazines like The Rumpus, Granta, Guernica and others. My food essay on Irani tikka from The Soup managed to make it to one of their recent newsletters.
4. Encouragement Notes
Esme Weijun Wang, the author of The Border of Paradise and The Collected Schizophrenias sends out little encouragement notes. If you’re a writer, you must check this out. When I signed up for it, I didn’t know how much they would help me. Rejections being a very big part of the writing journey, such notes are essential to remind you to keep going.
5. Literary Hub
I love their newsletters for their craft advice from writers of different genres and backgrounds. Their latest series on The Craft of Writing is quite insightful. The one on Revising without losing your mind by Marcy Dermansky has stayed with me.
I could sense pure dread. All the joy, all the play was gone. “You can rework material to death,” I warned her, and honestly, she already had. “Why don’t you start something new. See what happens. Have fun. Play.”
6. Damyanti’s Writing Gazette
Damyanti Biswas’ latest book The Blue Bar is out now. I had interviewed her for her debut You Beneath Your Skin on Books and Beyond. Her newsletter curates writing advice from experts, and calls for submissions among other resources for writers. Follow here.
